A college friend of mine, Tyeshia, is such an inspiring mom. She has two children and she loves to read with them. She is always posting cool new books that moms should check out with their children. I definitely take notes to make sure I have them for AnnDrew. She does cool science experiments with them, arts and crafts that stimulate their imagination and reads to them everyday. My love for children’s books is pretty high up on my list of things that I enjoy. Whether it be trips to the library, or local bookstore my littles and I get very excited about sharing a book together. I probably became obsessed with children’s literature around the time that I became pregnant with my son (almost six years ago). Two things that struck me were how powerful early literacy was to brain development and how there was a lack of diversity in children’s books. As a new mommy it was important for me to fill our home with positive images of little people that looked like my child(ren) and the children in my family. It was also important for me to choose books that were engaging, educational, and fun. Fast forward to now and we’ve added another child to the mix. Our book collection continues to multiply. Every new story, and even our old favorites continue to add bursting smiles and excitement in our home. When choosing the right books for your child(ren) there are a few key things to keep in mind.
1. Is my child interested in this topic? -trust me children know what they like and are going to be more engaged and better readers if they are allowed to choose the books they want to read
2. Does the book have rhyming phrases, or quirky sentences? Let’s get those giggles out while reading, it makes for a fun adventure and a budding imagination.
3. Are the illustrations A-M-A-Z-I-N-G- vibrant colors and bold pictures are sure to catch your little ones attention. There are so many benefits to sharing a book with a child but most importantly, it’s the bonding that is happening and the memories that are being made that are most important. Priceless!

Summer time can be an exciting time for children, but it can also be a time where a lot of learning is lost.
